Design and Build
The core of the PACTOutdoors PACT Lite Bathroom Kit is its ergonomic aluminum shovel. Designed to be lightweight and durable, it serves a dual purpose: first, as a tool for efficiently digging a cat hole, and second, as a storage container. The shovel handle features a sealed compartment intended to hold a week’s supply of the included mycelium tabs and compressed wipes, aiming to keep everything organized in one place. With closed dimensions of 8.5 inches by 1.75 inches, the kit is designed for minimal pack footprint, a critical factor for weight-conscious backpackers and ultrarunners. The aluminum construction is noted as more durable than common plastic backpacking trowels, though manufacturer data indicates it is slightly heavier than those alternatives. The kit is available in pink and green color options.
Performance and Features
Digging Tool Efficiency
The shovel’s primary function is to make digging a hole fast and easy. Owner feedback consistently praises its ergonomic design, stating it makes short work of creating a cat hole. Its effectiveness is a significant upgrade from bulkier plastic shovels commonly used for this purpose, contributing directly to the kit’s goal of encouraging proper Leave No Trace practices by simplifying the process.
Mycelium Tabs for Decomposition
This kit introduces a notable biological component. The included PACT mycelium tabs are made from the root system of fungi, which acts as a natural decomposer. The manufacturer states that adding three tabs to the cat hole alongside the used wipe can speed up waste decomposition by up to ten times. The tabs are also designed to neutralize pathogens that could harm wildlife and waterways while improving soil bioavailability, addressing a key environmental concern with backcountry human waste.
Plant-Based Compressed Wipes
Instead of traditional toilet paper, the kit includes compressed, plant-based wipes. Each wipe is roughly the size of a bottle cap until activated with a small amount of water, at which point it unfolds into a 9-inch moist towelette. The manufacturer claims they are free of additives and forever chemicals and decompose 95% within 75 days. Furthermore, the used wipe is intended to accelerate the growth of the mycelium from the tabs, creating a synergistic breakdown system within the buried cat hole.
Setup, Support and Ownership
The PACTOutdoors PACT Lite Bathroom Kit arrives as a ready-to-use system. Setup involves simply loading the shovel’s handle compartment with a selection of tabs and wipes from the provided resealable pouches for a trip. The lifetime warranty offered by the manufacturer provides significant long-term support, suggesting confidence in the shovel’s durability. Refill packs for the consumable tabs and wipes are a logical ownership consideration, though their availability and pricing are not detailed in the provided data. A noted ownership challenge mentioned in reviews is that mud can enter the handle compartment, and the black cap can be difficult to clean when dirty.
What Owners Say
Overall owner sentiment is strongly positive, reflected in the high average rating. The majority of reviewers award the highest rating, frequently describing it as the best backcountry bathroom solution they’ve used. Common praise focuses on the all-in-one convenience, the lightweight and ergonomic shovel design, and the eco-friendly peace of mind provided by the biodegradable components. Many highlight the compressed wipes as a standout feature, appreciating their effectiveness and compact form. A smaller portion of feedback, while still positive, suggests that some owners prefer to purchase the aluminum shovel separately and forego the consumables. The primary criticisms from owners mirror the editor’s notes: the handle compartment can admit mud and become difficult to clean.

Who Should Buy It (and Who Should Skip It)
The PACT Lite Bathroom Kit is an excellent choice for backpackers, thru-hikers, bikepackers, and campers who frequently venture into areas without established bathroom facilities and are committed to minimizing their environmental impact. Its consolidated design is perfect for those who value organization and want to avoid fumbling for separate components. It’s also ideal for those new to backcountry waste disposal who want a guided, responsible system. For more insights on essential outdoor gear, explore our Tech Gear section.
This kit may be less suitable for ultra-minimalist gram-counters who might opt for a lighter plastic trowel alone. Day hikers who rarely need such facilities might find it an unnecessary purchase. Additionally, those who prefer using natural materials or have their own established waste kit components might only be interested in the shovel sold separately, if that option exists.
Final Verdict
The PACTOutdoors PACT Lite Bathroom Kit successfully integrates thoughtful design with an environmentally conscious mission. It transforms a necessary but often awkward aspect of backcountry travel into a streamlined, responsible process. The ergonomic shovel is a genuine improvement over basic trowels, and the inclusion of mycelium tabs represents an innovative approach to accelerating waste breakdown. While minor design quibbles like the muddy handle compartment exist, they are overshadowed by the kit’s overall utility and convenience.
For anyone serious about outdoor recreation where facilities are absent, this kit offers a significant upgrade in hygiene, organization, and ecological responsibility. It lives up to its goal of being a lightweight, all-in-one system that encourages proper practices, making it a highly recommended piece of gear for the modern, conscientious adventurer. FAQs
How many uses does one kit provide?
The included components are supplied in quantities intended for approximately 20 bathroom trips. This consists of 60 mycelium tabs (with a recommended usage of three per trip) and 20 compressed plant-based wipes. The shovel itself, of course, is reusable indefinitely.
Are the wipes and tabs truly biodegradable?
According to the manufacturer’s specifications, the plant-based wipes are designed to decompose 95% within 75 days when buried, and are free of additives and forever chemicals found in some traditional products. The mycelium tabs are made from a natural fungal root system intended to integrate with and benefit the soil ecosystem, actively speeding up the decomposition process.
Can I buy the aluminum shovel by itself?
The available data specifies the product as an all-in-one kit. While some owner reviews mention a preference for purchasing just the metal trowel, the manufacturer’s current offering as presented is the complete kit with shovel, tabs, and wipes. Separate purchase options for individual components are not listed in the provided information.
Is this kit suitable for all types of soil?
The aluminum shovel is designed for digging in typical backcountry soils. Owner reviews confirm it is effective for creating cat holes. However, in extremely rocky, frozen, or hard-packed ground, any digging tool’s effectiveness will be limited. The kit is designed for the standard “dig a 6-8 inch deep cathole” practice recommended by Leave No Trace principles.
